RIT’s School of Individualized Study, or SOIS, is a place for students to forge their own paths. Students work with our faculty to determine a course of study that aligns with their interests and talents while simultaneously preparing them for professional careers of their choice. SOIS gives students the freedom to explore, flexibility to create their own major, and access to courses across RIT’s colleges that they need to succeed. Overall, our school is for those who have a unique path for their future.

Years of putting out students first
Young adults just entering their college careers, and even those already working through college, are presented with what feels like endless choices in a limited amount of time. Students should feel in charge of their futures, but this uncertainty has led to 80% of students to change their majors at least once during their college career. By joining SOIS, students can work with our 16 dedicated staff and faculty members to find the path that’s right for them. For 55 years, we have consistently prioritized the needs of our students, providing them with a strong community of supporters while encouraging their independent growth. With over 1,000 courses to choose from, we allow our students a broad range of interests to study in the ways that work best for them. SOIS is proud to have dedicated our work to create personalized experiences for each student, and we are excited to see what comes next.
Tracy Palmer is a third year SOIS student studying Sustainable Construction and Design. Her current project combines her passion for sustainability with her remarkable talents in engineering and design, and she is set to present her work during the SOIS Capstone event in April. When asked why she chose SOIS, Palmer says that “there was no major listed that combined everything I wanted to do, so I made my own path”. In a unique blend of environmental studies, sustainability, engineering, and structural design courses, she has created a personalized major that works best for her.
